The best certificate platform in Nigeria depends on one question

Whether anyone has to check the certificates afterwards. If nobody does, the best option costs nothing and you should stop reading after the first section. If somebody does, you need a different category of product altogether, and most of the disappointment in this market comes from buying the first while needing the second.

Why this is not a ranked list

Search this question and you will find several numbered lists, most of them published by one of the platforms on the list, most of which have that platform at number one. We are not going to do that, partly because it is transparent and mostly because a ranking would be false. We have no basis for scoring these tools against each other, and the honest structure of this market is four categories rather than one league table.

Choosing the right category settles most of the decision. Choosing between two vendors inside a category is a much smaller question, and one you can answer in a trial. Our other comparisons go vendor by vendor once you know which category you are in.

The four categories

Named products appear as examples of a category rather than as recommendations, and the descriptions cover what each is designed to do rather than what it charges. Pricing and feature lists move faster than this page can, so confirm both with the vendor.

Design tools
Canva, Word and PowerPoint templates, online certificate makers
Good at: Producing a good-looking certificate quickly and very cheaply. For attendance, internal recognition, and events, this is the correct answer and everything below is overspending.
Where it stops: What comes out is an image. There is no record behind it, so a forged copy is indistinguishable from a genuine one and confirming either means contacting you. Verification is not a feature these tools are missing; it is outside what they are for.
Global credential platforms
Credly, Accredible, Sertifier, Certifier and similar
Good at: Issuing at scale with verification built in, standards support such as Open Badges, and recipient wallets. If your credentials must be readable by systems you do not control, this category is where to look.
Where it stops: They are software your team operates, priced and supported for organisations with someone whose job includes running them. Billing in foreign currency against a naira budget is a real constraint, and so is a support window that closes before your afternoon does.
Managed issuing services
Certifications.ng, and bureau services offered by some print firms
Good at: You send a recipient list and receive finished credentials. Nobody on your side learns a tool or maintains a template. This suits organisations that issue in bursts, where software is forgotten between intakes.
Where it stops: You are dependent on a provider's turnaround rather than pressing a button yourself, which matters if you need to issue at an hour's notice. And a service is only as good as what it hands back: ask what a stranger has to do to check one of its credentials.
Building it yourself
An internal tool over your student records system
Good at: Complete control, no per-credential cost, and integration with the records you already hold. Genuinely the right answer for an institution with a development team and a long horizon.
Where it stops: The build is the small part. Someone has to keep verification URLs alive for as long as the credentials matter, which is decades, through every replatform and every staff change. Most abandoned credential systems were built rather than bought.

Four questions that settle it

Ask these of every vendor you speak to, including us. They sort the categories faster than any feature comparison, because each one has an answer a sales conversation cannot dress up.

  1. Does anyone need to check these certificates later?

    If not, stop at a design tool. This single question separates a free solution from a paid one, and most of the regret in this market comes from answering it wrong.

  2. What does a stranger do to verify one, in full, without contacting us?

    Ask for the exact steps, then follow them yourself on a real credential. A surprising number of platforms answer this with an email address, which means the credential is not verifiable in any useful sense.

  3. What happens to those links if we stop paying?

    Verification URLs printed on certificates and posted on profiles outlive contracts. The answer to this question is rarely volunteered and always worth having in writing.

  4. Who does the work at issuance, us or them?

    This decides whether the cost is a subscription or a subscription plus a part-time job. It is the difference the evaluation usually misses and the first month always finds.

What is different about issuing in Nigeria

The technology is the same everywhere. Two things about the local context genuinely change the decision.

Degrees are getting a national register. Nothing else is. Since October 2025, clearance through the National Credential Verification Service has been mandatory for appointments across ministries, agencies and higher institutions, and it issues a national credential number against a verified academic record. It covers tertiary academic credentials. Professional membership, training provider certificates, bootcamp credentials, corporate compliance records, and event certificates all sit outside it, and secondary results, national service and each professional register still run separately at their own pace. The practical consequence for this decision is not that Nigeria lacks a central register. It is that one now exists for degrees and does not exist for whatever you issue, and the comparison is being made against your certificates either way. A recruiter who has just checked a degree by number is a harder audience for a course certificate carrying nothing.

Foreign-currency pricing and support hours are real costs. A per-credential fee in dollars behaves differently against a naira budget than the sticker price suggests, and a support queue that opens in the afternoon is a slow week when a cohort is waiting. Neither is disqualifying. Both belong in the comparison rather than being discovered after signing.

Where we fit, and where we do not

We are the third category. You send a recipient list; we issue signed certificates and badges as verifiable credentials, each with its own permanent verification page that anyone can open without an account. Three cases where we are the wrong answer, and it is cheaper for both of us if you find that out here. We do not issue Open Badges, so if that standard is a stated requirement, use a platform in the second category. We are not a design tool, so if you want to lay out a certificate yourself this afternoon, Canva is a better afternoon than a conversation with us. And we do not hand over award setup, so if the requirement is to build a new credential yourself at midnight without talking to anyone, that is not what this is. Can I just use Canva to make certificates?
Yes, and for many purposes you should. Canva produces good-looking certificates quickly and cheaply. What it does not produce is a record anybody can verify: a Canva certificate is an image, so a forged one is indistinguishable from a genuine one and confirming either means emailing the issuer. Use it for attendance and internal recognition; do not use it where the certificate has to survive scrutiny.
Are global platforms a problem for Nigerian issuers?
Not inherently, but three frictions recur: pricing in dollars against a naira budget, support hours that do not overlap the Nigerian working day, and the assumption that your team will operate the software. None is disqualifying. They matter most for organisations issuing in two or three concentrated bursts a year, where the tool is forgotten between intakes and relearned each time.
What should I ask a certificate platform before signing?

Does a certificate need a QR code to be verifiable?
The QR code is convenience, not verification. What makes a credential checkable is that it resolves to a record held by the issuer showing who was awarded what, and ideally a cryptographic signature over that record. A QR code printed on a document with nothing behind it is decoration, and it appears on forgeries too, which is worth knowing before treating one as reassurance.
